Star Asset Security - Delivering building security and expert solutions for commercial real estate.

Security Tips

  • Do not allow doors to be propped open. It compromises security and fire safety. Remove item holding door open, close door and throw item away.
  • Be aware of solicitors. Some may be legitimate, but others are only evaluating the building for a potential future burglary.
  • Provide adequate lighting in public areas and at vulnerable points outside the building.
  • Know which personnel have keys and access to secure areas. Make sure only those who need access have keys.
  • Establish procedures for knowing your visitors and vendors. Insist on proper identification, and determine their business on the premises.
  • Place signs or decals at property entry, perimeter fencing, windows and doors to indicate an alarm system or watch services protection.
  • Do not allow unknown or unexpected service or repair personnel free access to the building.
  • Do not allow anyone into the building with your access keys or card as you enter after regular business hours.
  • Ensure computer access is restricted to authorized personnel.
  • The best standard entry doors are metal, followed by wired glass or solid-core wood. Door should be mounted in a good frame with anti-tamper hinges and use a good commercial grade locking system with two locks.
  • Lock interior and exterior doors and windows. Check all doors and windows when you leave. Report broken locks immediately.
  • For doors secured by locks, make sure the outside lock cylinder is protected from twisting and prying. Also ensure doors are protected by heavy duty, double cylinder deadbolt locks.
  • For doors secured by bolts, make sure the bolts are protected so they cannot be cut.
  • Windows should be constructed of wired glass, Plexiglas or anti-breakage type film to provide solid protection. Exterior metal shutters or metal bars provide excellent physical protection.
  • Provide interior locking devices on roof hatches and good locks to rooftop doors. Other openings such as skylights or ducting, which service mechanical systems, should be protected with security bars.
